Five Common Questions We Get From Teens

September 27th, 2018

Invisalign has been proven to fix all sorts of problems for teens. Overbites, underbites and overcrowding, are just a few smile issues we at Nord Orthodontics have treated in teenagers with Invisalign. Teens often ask about clear appliances for obvious reasons: they want an invisible way to fix their teeth. The first question they ask is if Invisalign is available for kids their age. The answer is yes.

The next question is always a little different, and sometimes surprising. So we talked with our awesome orthodontist, Dr. Scott Nord and compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions by teens about Invisalign treatment. If we don’t answer your teen’s question below, email us, call the office at Orem at (801) 225-7141, our Eagle Mountain at (801) 789-5444, or hit us up on Facebook! Yep, we’re pretty social.

Teens Frequently Asked Questions:

What if I accidentally lose the aligner?

Part of growing up is learning responsibility. But we get it. Things can happen. You’re in lunch and you put your clear aligner in a napkin while you’re eating. Next thing you know, the bell rings, you’re rushing to get to class, and you accidentally throw out your Invisalign appliance. Don’t panic. We can fix this. Your measurements are kept in our office for safe keeping in case this very thing happens. Have your parents call the office and we will have a new aligner created for you. (No promises you won’t get grounded for a day by Mom or Dad!)

Can I play sports with aligners in?

Yes. Whether you’re on the mat, court, or field (or the bowling alley) your clear aligners are totally safe to wear while playing sports. You can wear them without worrying about irritating the inside of your mouth or gums.

One important thing to remember: Invisalign appliances are NOT mouthguards. If your sport requires a mouthguard then take out the aligner and put in your regular mouthguard while playing. A mouthguard will provide protection from impact to your mouth, Invisalign will not. Just remember to put your clear aligners in a safe place so you don’t lose them. (See above.)

What can I eat with Invisalign treatment?

This is the cool part, you can eat anything with Invisalign. Unlike traditional metal braces your Invisalign aligners can be removed to eat so you don’t have any restrictions on the food you can chew while undergoing treatment. Of course, we wouldn’t be good doctors if we didn’t encourage you to eat healthy, stay away from sugary foods, and brush after every meal. Other than that: go for it!

Should I wear them while giving a speech in class? Will they make me talk funny?

Yes, wear them! And no one will know because they’re invisible! You should especially wear them if you’re giving a speech about how much you love your Invisaligns! :)

And, no, they will not make you talk funny. You can trust us because we did our homework on this one. A recent report shows more than 90% of people who got Invisalign said that they were so comfortable in their aligners that they had no problem speaking with them on. We make no guarantees that your teacher will give you an A on your speech, but we can guarantee that your classmates will hear you loud and clear.

How many hours a day do I have to wear them?

This is an important question. You should wear your aligners 22 hours a day at a minimum.

There are times we recommend you take out your clear aligners: during sports that require a mouthguard and while eating. Keep track of the time your aligners are out of your mouth, it adds up quickly. Other than that, Invisalign can be worn all day and night. Remember that the more you wear your appliance the better your treatment will go according to plan we lay out for you.

When Clear Aligners aren’t the Answer

June 27th, 2018

Clear aligners like Invisalign® have become increasingly popular over the past several years and rightly so. They’re removable, easier to clean than braces, and hardly anyone knows you're wearing them. They are great in treating many cases, but they aren't for everyone.

Below, Dr. Scott Nord and our team cover some of the instances where clear aligners just aren't the answer:

  • If drastic tooth movement is required – Fixed appliances deliver much more significant tooth movement. So if your case is a drastic one, clear aligners may not be the best choice.
  • If you need to move molars – Molars have much stronger roots than your other teeth and would require significantly longer to move with clear aligners. A fixed appliance is the best choice in this instance, especially if you have a substantial overbite or underbite that needs to be dealt with.
  • If you're the type who often forgets or loses things –If you would forget to wear your aligners for the prescribed amount of time (usually at least 22 hours per day), clear aligners are probably not the best choice for you. Forgetting to wear them can delay treatment and even make it so you need to regress to the previous set of aligners to be able to move forward with treatment. And let's face it, if you're not careful, removable aligners are easy to lose. Losing aligners delays treatment and is expensive since you need to buy replacements to stay on course. Replacing a lost set of aligners usually takes between seven and ten days—a definite setback in treatment.
  • If you're looking for the fastest treatment possible – Clear aligners usually can't move teeth as quickly as fixed appliances. So if you're looking for the fastest way to achieve your desired result, clear aligners may not be the best bet.

Feel free to talk with Dr. Scott Nord about your options regarding braces and clear aligners. We know there are pros and cons to both, so let’s find the option that works best in your life and for your specific needs in terms of treatment. Should I Get Braces?

June 20th, 2018

If you’re thinking about investing in braces, there are a few things you should take into consideration. It’s normal for adult teeth to come in crooked, which is why braces are a common solution for teens and adults who desire a beautiful smile.

Your dentist may recommend orthodontic treatment if crooked teeth begin to affect your or your child’s oral health. But many factors go into whether braces would be right for you or your child, or not.

Modern orthodontic treatments offer numerous options for the typical issues people face, such as crooked teeth or jaw alignment problems. Malocclusion, otherwise known as having a bad bite, is common in patients with crooked teeth.

Braces can be worn for a short period of time to correct uneven jaw alignment, which may be the cause of an underbite or overbite in patients. A retainer is worn afterward to keep the newly straightened teeth in place.

Now that one in five braces wearers is an adult, grownups have a variety of braces options. Braces are typically left on for at least one year to straighten teeth effectively. Options can include regular metal braces, clear braces, or Invisalign® aligners.

If you’re an adult and would prefer a discreet treatment, clear braces or Invisalign retainers are your best options. Dr. Scott Nord will be able to provide you with a recommended best route of treatment depending on what you’re trying to accomplish and what your budget is. Before getting braces, it’s worth learning about all the methods of treatment available at Nord Orthodontics.

Be sure to contact your insurance company before your appointment to see if orthodontic treatments are covered; otherwise, you may want to plan to pay for out-of-pocket costs. If you have questions regarding the types of treatment we provide for our patients, call our Orem or Eagle Mountain, UT office for more information.

Adults and Braces

June 13th, 2018

Braces aren’t just for kids. Many grownups are taking advantage of orthodontic treatment and having their teeth straightened at a later age.

Sometimes, patients include adults who already had braces in the past, but their teeth shifted over time once they stopped wearing their retainers. In other cases, adults who have never had braces are tired of having crooked teeth and ready to invest in a beautiful smile.

Whatever the case may be, if you’re looking to straighten your teeth with braces, Dr. Scott Nord would love to help you with this process. Having a dazzling smile can increase your confidence in all areas of your life!

Depending on what you’re willing to spend and how quickly you would like to complete the process, you have various options for getting braces. We all know what traditional metal braces look like. This is a less-expensive route for individuals who have severely crooked or displaced teeth. However, many adults avoid option because the braces are noticeable or distracting in a professional atmosphere.

For people concerned about aesthetics, clear ceramic braces may be a preferable option. This type can still fix extremely crooked teeth or jaw alignment issues. It may be slightly more expensive than traditional metal braces. Patients who choose this treatment route need to be careful not to stain the clear adhesives by drinking too much coffee, red wine, soda, or other beverages that can discolor teeth.

Another great option for adults who don’t want to have visible braces is a clear aligner treatment known as Invisalign®. This popular option differs from traditional braces by featuring a series of clear aligners that are each custom-made for your teeth.

The entire process can take anywhere from three to 18 months to straighten your teeth completely. This may not be the best choice for patients who have an overcrowded mouth or extreme bite issues. Invisalign is often the most expensive option, but it’s great if you’re concerned about your appearance while your teeth are being straightened.

If you’ve been thinking about straightening your teeth with the help of braces, don’t hesitate to contact our Orem or Eagle Mountain, UT office to set up a consultation. From there, Dr. Scott Nord can figure out the best course of treatment, depending on your budget and overall needs.

Adult braces can be a great way to boost your confidence and finally give you the smile you’ve always wanted.
